Popular Boudoir Hair Styles - Sydney Boudoir Photography

Have you been wondering how to have your hair styled for your boudoir photoshoot? Take a look at some of our most popular looks!

Most clients come in with very little idea about what they want for their hair styling on the day of their boudoir photoshoot session. And that’s completely fine! We let you discuss options with our expert hair & makeup artist, because they’re the best people to know what will suit your unique hair, facial features, etc.

But we thought it might help to know about some of our most popular styles!

Loose Curls/Waves

By far, soft/loose curls and waves are our most commonly chosen hair style and certainly one of our all-time favourites in the studio! This style offers a sexy, sensual bedroom look that works especially well for boudoir portraits. It’s timeless and will match literally any outfit - whether you’re going with something strappy and bondage-esque, or something more romantic, soft curls will give you that perfectly tousled, glamorous, yet effortless ‘just woke up like this’ vibe. If you have root regrowth as well, curls are great at adding a bit of texture that will create a lovely blended look!

Straight & Sleek

Whether you have naturally straight hair or not, a sleek and straight hair style can be a gorgeous look for your boudoir photos. If you already have straight hair naturally, you’ll be done in minutes with our hair and makeup artist and will feel like yourself in your final images! If you’re naturally curly, your boudoir session might be a great opportunity to try something different. Straight hair styling can be best for people who are blessed with thicker hair, so you don’t have to sacrifice any volume in the end result.

Natural Hair

If you love your hair exactly as it is, why not rock your boudoir session with your natural hair! Our hair and makeup artists will still be able to offer a bit of product or hairspray if needed, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wearing your natural look. Sometimes confidence comes from feeling like you’re getting glammed up beyond the every day, whereas for others, confidence comes from feeling most like yourself.

Coloured Hair

Coloured hair can pop beautifully in boudoir photographs, adding something special to an otherwise neutral image. Whether you go for something really subtle to add dimension to your natural colour, or want a look that’s more vibrant and bright, coloured hair can add a whole new dimension to your appearance. We know that booking in for a boudoir photoshoot can often be a nerve-wracking experience, but it’s also something that we see time and time again helps clients to really step outside of their comfort zone - so if you’ve thought for ages about giving your hair a colourful makeover, a boudoir session might be a great chance to do so!

Melanie's Boudoir Experience

Read about Melanie’s boudoir photoshoot session, and how the experience impacted her confidence and the way she felt about herself.

“The whole experience was honestly just like hanging out with a group of friends, full of laughter!”

Have a read of what one of our amazing clients had to say after her boudoir photoshoot!

Melanie <3

Did you have any fears/hesitations about doing a boudoir session?

Yes so so many. I was so worried about posing… I’m not a model, I had no idea what I was doing.

How did you feel before your photoshoot?

I was nervous but I was so excited at the same time.

Beautiful woman wearing black fishnet lingerie, running her hand through her hair while standing by a sunny window

Now that you’ve had your session, how was the day and how did the photoshoot make you feel?

I feel so silly for ever thinking I couldn’t do something like this just because I’m not a model. I felt so comfortable during the shoot, especially with all the posing help. And afterwards, I felt like the most empowered baddie on the planet.

Was the session similar/different from what you expected it to be? Did anything surprise you?

Very different, I honestly don’t even think I knew what to expect to be honest. The whole experience was honestly just like hanging out with a group of friends full of laughter.

Woman wearing black fishnet lingerie standing beside a window, with one hand running through her hair

How did you feel when you first saw your final images?

I couldn’t believe it was me! I wanted to post them on every social site that exists just so everyone could see how incredible I looked.

Dark haired woman wearing green lingerie, lying on her back on a hotel bed with her bands placed on her chest

Did anything change about the way you saw yourself, your body, sensuality, etc as a result of the experience?

Yes! I never bounced back after having my child… I never really felt sexy, but my god has my entire confidence changed since that shoot!

What would you say to people considering doing a boudoir session, but say they are too shy, nervous, uncertain, etc?

Do it! Honestly, you’ll thank yourself later. You don’t even have to be in lingerie if you don’t want to, and all the things I know you’re nervous about just fade away during the shoot.

What was your favourite part of the experience as a whole?

Getting to have some time for me, and being made to look and feel like an absolute goddess.

Is there anything we could have done differently to make the overall experience even better for you?

Honestly no, you guys where incredible.

Would you suggest that other people book into a session with Heartfire Boudoir? Why or why not?

I’ve suggested Heartfire to literally everyone who asks me about boudoir shoots.

Miss N <3

Did you have any fears/hesitations about doing a boudoir session?

I was definitely a little bit anxious going in, but you guys were amazing about laying out anything and everything at the shoot, and answering any questions I had before the day, so I knew I would be in safe hands.

How did you feel before your photoshoot?

Super nervous to do a shoot in lingerie, as I had never done that before.

Woman lying on hotel bed wearing blue flower lingerie, leaning back

Now that you’ve had your session, how was the day and how did the photoshoot make you feel?

I had so much fun. From meeting everyone and the food and drinks while getting glammed, to going through the closet that you guys brought, to taking the pictures and being guided throughout… I had such an amazing experience and felt like an absolute royal throughout it all.

Women kneeling on rugs on a hotel bed wearing beautiful lingerie outfit

Was the session similar/different from what you expected it to be? Did anything surprise you?

I was a little bit surprised by how good Talia was at explaining and demonstrating each and every pose. If ever there was some hesitance in positioning, Talia would come in and have another pose suggestion on standby and jump in and show me herself, which made me feel super relaxed and comfortable.

How did you feel when you first saw your final images?

Kind of in awe… because I was shown them at the viewing and they looked great then, but when I got the finals back, I had kind of forgotten how well they came out. I admit I was a bit shocked looking at them thinking that was me, but it gave me such a massive boost of confidence too.

Did anything change about the way you saw yourself, your body, sensuality, etc as a result of the experience?

I never would have imagined myself in this way, nor was I comfortable enough to think I could look like this and convey the sensuality that the final pictures show… but now I can.

What would you say to people considering doing a boudoir session, but say they are too shy, nervous, uncertain, etc?

If you are shy or uncertain, then this is exactly for you. It will show you that you can be that confident sexy person even if you don't feel it, because Talia and Jasper will make you feel that way and you'll see it in your photos.

What was your favourite part of the experience as a whole?

The actual shoot was amazing. Posing and taking those photos made me feel like a million bucks because there's something about wearing something you feel sexy in and having a photoshoot that just feels awesome.

Is there anything we could have done differently to make the overall experience even better for you?

Everything was amazing. I honestly cannot have imagined it being done differently.

Would you suggest that other people book into a session with Heartfire Boudoir? Why or why not?

Absolutely. Being able to look back at photos of myself looking this good is always going to make me feel good about myself and remind me that I can feel and be as sexy as I want to be, and so can anyone else.

Does a Lack of Confidence Ever Hold You Back?

Have you ever wanted to do something but immediately thought “I’m just not a confident enough person to do that”? Confidence is something we talk about a lot as boudoir photographers. And it’s something that you absolutely can grow, nurture and develop with practice. Have a read about what you can do each day to improve your sense of inner confidence!

Daily Habits To Grow Your Self-Confidence

Confidence (or conversely, a sense of lacking confidence) is something we talk about a lot as boudoir photographers. So many of our clients will enquire into doing a photoshoot for themselves, but will express fears around ‘not being confident enough’.

When certain narratives swim around and around in our mind for years, it makes perfect sense that we’d start to believe those things! So of course you might not feel confident enough right now… your brain has been trying to convince you that you’re not, and has probably tried to prevent you from doing things that don’t fall in line with those beliefs. Those narratives come from so many different places - past experiences, society telling us that we’re just not enough, etc, and they can feel incredibly strong.

Once we understand the driving force behind why we might not be feeling as confident as we’d like to, where do we actually go from there? How do we step out of our own way, and start living life as the confident, powerful, and badass version of ourselves that we truly are?

Woman in green lingerie lying on a hotel bed with flowers in the background

To put it simply: practice and repetition

Confidence is 100% a practice. Although we might think that some people are born with an innate sense of confidence, that’s often not actually the case! Confidence is a commitment, an ongoing practice, a skill, and something that takes time to build and develop. It might sound counter-intuitive, but *doing* things that make us feel confident actually allows ourselves to shift our internal perspective, and as a result, to truly change our feelings.

If you’re familiar with the principles behind cognitive behavioural therapy, you’ll know that the way we act and behave can have a huge impact on our thoughts and emotions. Most of the time, we’ve *learned* to think certain things about ourselves, others and the world. And in the same way that we’ve gradually learned those narratives, we can learn new ones for ourselves.

What does this actually look like?

It’s making small, manageable changes to what we do and how we think, and continuing to commit to those changes over time. In other words, giving yourself permission to treat yourself like the confident and capable person you actually are!

There are a few things you can do each and every day to nourish your own inner confidence:

Woman lying on bed in green lingerie with professional hair and makeup

Use positive affirmations in a genuine way

I’m sure you’ve heard the people who will tell you to repeat to yourself that you’re an amazing, beautiful, incredible person. Although these things are absolutely true, it’s difficult sometimes to shift from a head space where we don’t believe those things at all about ourselves, to engaging with a thought that is 100% positive. Saying these kinds of affirmations to ourselves can in fact sometimes leave us feeling worse when our confidence isn’t so great, because it just seems way too different to our current beliefs about ourselves - and because of that, our mind can easily dismiss them as ‘unreasonable/unrealistic’.

For affirmations to genuinely make a difference, sometimes the most helpful thing is to start in a place that resonates more. That might be something like “I’m proud of how far I’ve come”, “I can choose to let go of negative feelings about myself”, “I’m not just my size or weight, I’m a whole person”, “My confidence is shown through my actions and personality, not my appearance”. It’s about finding a statement/affirmation that resonates with you.

Look at yourself in the mirror more often, but shift your focus

If body image is something that has impacted your sense of confidence, this can be one that feels tricky to change. And it comes back to what we mentioned earlier about how our behaviours can impact our thoughts and the way we ultimately feel about ourselves. If the only times you tend to look at yourself in the mirror are when you’re getting dressed and not really paying much attention, or when you’re actively criticising yourself, your brain is only receiving negative messages.

Make time each day to look in a mirror and invite yourself to notice something positive that you like - it doesn’t matter how small or insignificant it might seem at first. It could be that you like your long eyelashes, or that you have smooth/soft skin on the backs of your hands. But find something genuine. It’s probably going to feel unbelievably strange and foreign at first, and that’s completely ok! But the more you do this on a regular basis, the more natural it will begin to feel. And in time, those positive thoughts will start to become a lot more automatic than the negative ones.

Combat self-criticism with self-compassion

Although body image is a particular example, this action of eliminating self-criticism and introducing self-compassion is something that can be useful across almost every realm of your life. Are you a person who berates yourself for not doing things perfectly, for not being as productive as you’d like to be, for not responding to that Facebook message from a friend that has been in your inbox for a week, for not keeping the house as clean as you feel you should? Every single one of these instances is an opportunity to reframe your thinking.

When you notice yourself having that thought of “I should have done XYZ”, acknowledge the thought, but try thinking about or reframing the situation from another perspective - “I might not have done XYZ, but I was feeling exhausted… I’m prioritising self-care by not trying to do everything at once”. If that doesn’t feel quite right for yourself, another great way is to ask yourself what you might say to a close friend or loved one if they were in your situation. When we put a lid on the thoughts that bring us down and leave us feeling badly about ourselves, we give ourselves the proper space to build up our own confidence.

Stop apologising for things that really don’t require an apology

You know those times when you send an email or message to someone, and it starts with “Hi! I was just wondering…” or “Hey, sorry to bother you…”? It’s an understandable and very human trait to not want to burden or upset others, but when we find ourselves apologising for every little thing, we’re almost teaching our brain that we should be apologising for taking up space… or apologising for just existing. Saying ‘sorry’ when there’s a genuine reason to is absolutely a great thing to do, but when we’re running a couple of minutes late to catch up with a friend, or we need to ask someone for help with a small task, etc, an apology might not be the best option.

Instead, thank the other person. Rather than saying “I’m so sorry for taking so long to make up my mind about that decision”, say “Thank you for your patience while I figured out what was best”. Expressing gratitude is not only a way of leaving the other person feeling valued and cared about, but it’s also a way of existing that gives you permission to be a human being too.

This is something that we can use with respect to how we feel about our bodies as well. We often spend a lot of time feeling apologetic for how our bodies exist in the world - feeling as though they’re not fit/toned enough, not dressed in nice enough clothes, etc. How would it feel to shift the focus to thanking your body for the things that it allows you to do? For the beach-side walks it takes you on, for the hugs it’s helped you give your friends/family when they’ve been sad, for the times it’s allowed you to connect in intimate ways with people you love.

Review your strengths and past achievements

If you’re anything like Jasper and I, you might be someone whose brain is a bit of a trapbox when it comes to previous mistakes, times you might have made a fool of yourself, or things you wish you could have done differently. But when we allow ourselves to focus entirely on those kinds of past experiences, we’re viewing ourselves through a particular lens that doesn’t fully capture us as people. We all have strengths, and we’ve all achieved some pretty amazing things in our lives - we just don’t often give ourselves time and space to actively reflect on those things.

One fantastic way to really support your self-confidence is to be proactive in thinking about your own strengths. This could be absolutely anything: your artistic ability, leadership skills, sense of humour, ability to be flexible and to problem-solve, to give sage advice to others, to be adventurous, or even just being one of those people who is comfortable sitting in silence with another person who might be upset. I know that you DO have strengths, and that you in fact have a LOT of them. How do you feel if you give yourself some space to reflect on those qualities now? How does it feel when you think about past situations where you displayed those strengths, or where they were able to help you/someone else? How might those strengths be able to help you move forward in other areas of your life now?

I know that every single client who has ever booked in for a boudoir photoshoot with us has a myriad of strengths they probably didn’t even realise. Doing things that are scary is hard, and it requires resilience, bravery, and the choice to take a risk in spite of the nerves and anxiety that might be there. But their individual strengths helped build the foundation of confidence that enabled them to have the experiences they wanted - and yours can too.

Consider your needs and boundaries

Although needs and boundaries might not sound like the sexiest concepts, they really form the foundation of crafting a life that you enjoy living and feeling confident within yourself. Often, the best way to identify what your needs and desires are, and what things you’d want to say hell yes to vs what things you’d rather give a miss, is self-reflection. Whether that’s through journaling, meditation, or just considering and reflecting upon things mentally, it’s such an important step in understanding and asking for what we need in life. And when you live your life authentically, that’s the true bedrock of unshakable confidence.

And lastly… do a boudoir photoshoot :P

So this might not be one you can technically practice ‘daily’, but so many of our clients tell us that after their photoshoot, they find themselves flicking through their album or pausing in front of the wall art they have hanging in their living room. For them, it’s a reminder of something they achieved - of having stepped (often WAY) outside of their comfort zone, and remembering what it felt like to genuinely feel confident within themselves. But whether it’s a boudoir photoshoot or something else entirely, doing something that makes you feel truly like yourself is a fantastic place to start.

“It Makes You Feel So Empowered…”

Have a read of what one of our amazing clients had to say after her boudoir photoshoot!

Aurora

I don’t think I’ve ever genuinely been in love with photos so much before, let alone ones of myself. If you told me even a year ago that I would be doing a boudior shoot, I would have laughed! But Heartfire Boudoir have made it the most magical and amazing experience ever. I don’t remember that last time I ever liked looking at photos of me or felt so beautiful. Talia and Jasper are the most wonderful and amazing people, and they made the whole experience absolutely incredible. If anyone was going to get a photoshoot done like this, I would 20/10 recommend them… I have never met people more professional and passionate about what they do, and also so willing to help people and do what they can to make them comfortable.

Woman wearing Honey Birdette lingerie lying on hotel room floor

Did you have any fears/hesitations about doing a boudoir session?

Definitely, I’ve always felt very insecure about my body and exposing myself in that way was very intimidating.

How did you feel before your photoshoot?

Nervous!

Now that you’ve had your session, how was the day and how did the photoshoot make you feel?

It was a little weird at first, but it was a very fun and relaxed environment. The shoot definitely made me feel a lot more powerful than I thought I could feel.

Was the session similar/different from what you expected it to be? Did anything surprise you?

It was a lot more professional than I thought it would be. Before you guys, I always thought boudoir shoots could be kind of sleazy, but it was the furthest thing from that!

How did you feel when you first saw your final images?

I was astonished with how amazing they were and how good they made me looked. I’ve never been so in love with photos of myself before.

Woman wearing Honey Birdette bondage collar in sexy lingerie photo

Did anything change about the way you saw yourself, your body, sensuality, etc as a result of the experience?

100%. I don’t look at myself and cringe anymore after doing the shoot and seeing my photos. They brought to life a new side or look to me and I’m incredibly in love with it. It definitely helped me to practice more self love and give more love to my body after seeing it in that way!

What would you say to people considering doing a boudoir session, but say they are too shy, nervous, uncertain, etc?

It’s very normal to feel like that, but honestly there is no need to. Talia and Jasper make the whole experience so incredible and comfortable and provide so much advice and support and are just generally wonderful people. There is nothing to worry about so just go for it!

What was your favourite part of the experience as a whole?

Honestly everything, there is not one thing I can pinpoint as my favourite.

Would you suggest that other people book into a session with Heartfire Boudoir? Why or why not?

YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES. It makes you feel so empowered and helps find the beauty within in yourself. They are both so incredibly lovely and nice and made the whole experience incredible from start to finish.

Kitty's Boudoir Experience

Take a peak into the gallery of one of our gorgeous clients, Kitty, and hear about her experience of doing a boudoir photoshoot session!

“It’s Not Just A Photoshoot, It’s An Entire Experience…”

We recently had the absolute pleasure of doing a session with this AMAZING woman, Kitty! She had initially spoken about feeling quite nervous before her shoot, and that she was worried about how the photos from her session might turn out… which is a 100% normal, understandable, and really really common feeling that our clients experience!

But we were just completely blown away by how incredible she was - she gave things a go, held poses even when they probably felt pretty darn strange, and was just a complete joy for us to spend a day with!

We did this particular session at Kitty’s own house, so we were lucky enough as well to have her wonderful partner Sam, and gorgeous cat Morty (words truly cannot describe just how photogenic Morty actually is…), jump in on some of the action to!

Kitty was lovely enough to share a bit about how she felt before/during/after her session, and what she thought of the experience as a whole. Check out her thoughts (and some of her gorgeous photos!) below:

Talia and Jasper are absolutely phenomenal! It’s not just a photoshoot. It’s an entire experience. One I’ve never had before. Talia and Jasper set an entire day aside for me and worked with my circumstances to make the shoot work for me. With hair and makeup covered, I didn’t have to worry about anything. The gallery reveal and picking up my products were both separate days and both such exciting experiences! They use top quality suppliers to get beautiful albums created. Words cannot express how glad I am to have been able to shoot with Talia and Jasper, and I’ve got some beautiful photos of me, my partner and my cat forever now.

Mostly just with my size as I’ve put on some weight recently and wasn’t sure I was ready for any photoshoot, let alone a boudoir one.

How did you feel before your photoshoot?

Nervous. But also super excited after seeing the portfolio of work.

Woman in boudoir photo lying on bed with confident and sexy expression

Now that you’ve had your session, how was the day and how did the photoshoot make you feel?

The day was sooooo fun! I feel amazing and so beautiful in my photos.

Was the session similar/different from what you expected it to be? Did anything surprise you?

The described experience got me excited as it sounded like a luxurious day to be honest! It definitely met my expectations!

How did you feel when you first saw your final images?

So excited and happy! Words cannot describe what a fun session the gallery reveal was.

Woman in boudoir photo with pet cat wearing purple sweater

Did anything change about the way you saw yourself, your body, sensuality, etc as a result of the experience?

I think I still see myself the same way and my insecurities will always be there, at least until I find a way to fully get rid of it… but there’s no denying the beauty of the photos and I absolutely love how I look in them.

What would you say to people considering doing a boudoir session, but say they are too shy, nervous, uncertain, etc?

Just do it!!! I was also nervous and apprehensive but it was so worth it!

Sexy woman in diamond bodysuit sitting on floor looking confident

What was your favourite part of the experience as a whole?

I can’t pick a favourite. Honestly was all great. Picking up my products and being able to see the final results was phenomenal, but it meant my experience was over and that’s sad!

Would you suggest that other people book into a session with Heartfire Boudoir? Why or why not?

Yes! Talia and Jasper are absolute legends and so friendly. They will work with whatever is most comfortable for you and the entire experience is just great! Highly recommend!

Wondering what to wear? Check out our Client Closet!

‘What should I wear?’ is one of the first questions we get asked when clients book in for a boudoir photography session with us! Although the options that you can bring along yourself are endless, we’ve recently started a client wardrobe with a range of items you can borrow to make sure that you feel like a million bucks at your photoshoot!

Look your best with items from our exclusive client closet

We know that doing a boudoir shoot can be intimidating. You might have never had any professional photos taken of yourself before, let alone ‘sexy’ professional photos! Maybe it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, but you had no idea what to wear.

Firstly, there’s no wrong choice when it comes to what you can wear for a boudoir photoshoot! The options honestly are endless. We have clients come in for bridal boudoir sessions wearing white lingerie or items from their partner’s wardrobe; people wanting to wear their comfiest sweater; and people who want to explore implied nudes with white bedsheets alone!

You really can’t go wrong, and we’ll always have a wardrobe consultation with you before your boudoir photoshoot so that you can feel assured and confident in what options you might want to bring along.

But we also know that sometimes, having a few extra outfits can really help! You might need a back-up in case something you ordered online didn’t arrive in the timeframe you needed before your photoshoot, or you might have a button pop off/clip break/etc on the day! That’s why we’ve started our very own client closet for you - you’ll be relaxed and at ease knowing that we have a Plan B, and have got you covered (metaphorically, and literally!) in case of any emergencies.

How does our Client Closet work?

The client closet is still in its infancy stages, and we have approximately 25 pieces between the sizes of S to XXL. Although we carry some bra/underwear sets, the majority of our boudoir wardrobe is comprised of one-piece bodysuits. Bodysuits typically have a lot more stretch (also, how great does no underwire feel?), and can therefore fit a broader range of sizes and body types. If you’ve ever had that problem where you’re a M in a top but a XL in a bottom etc, a bodysuit can be the perfect solution! We also have some body chains/body jewellery and bondage accessories.

Want to use some of our items?

It’s simple! We just ask that you bring a nude and/or black g-string, thong or brief with you on the day. All of our items are sanitised and professionally washed after each shoot, and if they become damaged in any way, they’ll always be replaced! It gives us the opportunity to mix-up and change the items we have, so that we can keep things fresh and on-trend for you.

Because every person has their own unique style, we always highly recommend that clients bring 3-4 outfits of their own that they LOVE to their boudoir photoshoot. This ensures that you can try your items on beforehand, make sure they fit well and that you feel comfortable in them. But if you want an extra outfit or two, have a look below at some of what we’ve got on offer in our wardrobe!

BODYSUITS

This is one of our favourite and most versatile pieces!! A rhinestone-studded mesh bodysuit that has some SERIOUS stretch to it. It comes in two one-size-fits-all sizes (a standard, and a curve/plus size). It’s something you can wear with only a nude/black g-string underneath for a super sexy look, or over the top of a bra/underwear set as is pictured. This is an incredibly popular choice for our clients… it truly is a one of a kind piece, and when you’re taking a day to be pampered and have professional boudoir photos taken, you want to feel like a million bucks!

The Honey Birdette matching Equestrian Leather Collar is the perfect addition to the cuffs! It has a weighted chain, large O ring and rose gold metallics.

The Honey Birdette Rose Gold Spreader Bar has a firm bar, with two size lengths, and cuffs affixed to either side.

Last but not least, our client closet show-stopper! This absolutely luxurious robe is floor length, sheer, and trimmed with plush marabou. The ruffled skirt and sleeves are amazingly extravagant, and the tie at the waist ensures that it’ll highlight your curves. Preparing For Your Boudoir Shoot

So, you booked your first boudoir session and now you’re wondering “How do I actually get ready for this experience?”. Or maybe you’re on the fence about booking in, and you’re simply looking for more information. We wanted to put together our top tips in helping you prepare for your boudoir photoshoot session!

8 Tips On How To Prepare For Your Photoshoot!

So, you booked your first boudoir session and now you’re wondering “How do I actually get ready for this experience?”. Or maybe you’re on the fence about booking in, and you’re simply looking for more information. We wanted to put together our top tips in helping you prepare for your boudoir photoshoot session!

Boudoir can feel mysterious and daunting if you’ve never done a photoshoot like it before. Every person carries insecurities about themselves, their body, etc… so when you’re considering taking your clothes off in front of a stranger, it can feel pretty intimidating! But believe us, we get it. We both know what it’s like to be on both sides of the camera, and we promise you that nerves are 100% normal. The baggage we often carry around about our bodies isn’t something that will just disappear overnight, but we can take steps towards healing our relationship with ourselves and reprogramming the way our brains perceive our bodies. It’s an incredibly powerful thing when you allow yourself to be seen (really seen) by another person, and to let them shed light on how they (and the rest of the world) view you.

So, have a read below of our top tips to help you best prepare for your amazing boudoir experience!

1. Do the things that make you feel sexy/beautiful/confident

In the week or two leading up to your photoshoot, it’s a fantastic idea to do the things that leave you feeling confident about yourself and your appearance! If you like having a fresh hair cut or getting your roots done, having an eyebrow wax, getting a manicure/pedicure, or even just taking some extra time for self-care each day, it’s great to schedule those things in the week before your session. This allows you to feel your best in the lead-up to your shoot! If you want to undertake any hair removal, it allows enough time for any lingering redness to disappear. But please know that when it comes to boudoir, the most important thing is to come exactly as you are. If that means doing things like waxing or shaving your legs, that’s great! If those things aren’t for you, that’s 100% fine too! Our boudoir sessions are a safe space for all bodies, and we want you to feel like a million bucks.

People sometimes feel as though they need to get a tan before doing a photoshoot. This definitely isn’t the case! All skin tones are beautiful and look amazing in photographs. It’s just about your personal preference and what makes you feel fantastic. If you do intend to use a fake tan of some kind, we recommend using tanning methods that you’ve tried in the past and that you know work! We also suggest doing any tanning at least 3-4 days before your shoot so that the tan has had time to properly settle.

2. Prepare the right way for professional hair & makeup

It’s best to arrive with a cleansed/exfoliated and moisturised face, with no makeup on. For your hair, please have clean (e.g. from the morning or day before) and completely dry hair, worn down, with no dents from hair ties etc. This provides the best base for our hair and makeup artist to work their magic on the day!

Moisturising the rest of your body is also a fantastic idea - it can make your skin look soft and radiant, and eliminate any dry patches of skin (e.g. around the elbows, knees, feet, etc).

3. Plan your wardrobe

Although many people think of boudoir as being about wearing lingerie, it really can involve anything when it comes to wardrobe options! Boudoir is about celebrating what makes you you. It doesn’t matter if that’s lace lingerie, a snuggly sweater, Doc Martin boots, or literally nothing but a white sheet… it’s totally up to you! We’ll always offer a wardrobe consultation session as well so you can talk through what options you might have, or get suggestions on things that generally work well. But it’s just about finding things that reflect your personal style and your personality.

We recommend bringing a range of outfits (typically between 3-6), so that we have different options to work with on the day. You might want to buy some new items for the shoot, or you might want to pull out something that you know and already love! Both of these are fantastic choices. It’s just important to find clothes that fit you well, and that you feel comfortable and confident in.

It can be a great idea as well to cut tags (e.g. size tags, or care instruction labels) off items where they might be visible, as they can stand out in photos!

Some people also love to bring accessories to have with them on the day. This might include things like hair pieces, jewellery, shoes (heels, boots, etc), stockings or knee-high socks, some of your partner’s clothing, or any other sentimental items you might have that you’d love to incorporate.

It’s also helpful to have a think about what to wear for when you arrive on the shoot day itself. Wearing loose-fitting clothing is best if you can, so that you avoid having any indentations or marks in your skin from things like tight bra straps, the waistband of jeans, tight socks, etc. It’s also good to use a clear (not white) deodorant on the day, just to avoid any white marks on your skin/clothing.

4. Engage in self care

Drinking plenty of water, getting a good night’s sleep, and having some food that will offer you energy beforehand can all be great ways of ensuring that you start the day off feeling your absolute best!

5. Get comfortable with your team

We’re both here for you every single step of the way! If you have anxieties, fears, or any worries about the shoot, let us know! You can always schedule a call with us to talk things through. After you book in for a shoot, you’ll also receive a pre-shoot questionnaire which allow us to help design the perfect shoot for you. It helps us understand what you’re wanting, what you’re comfortable with, if there are any parts of yourself that you want us to focus on or to focus on a bit less, etc. But the more you communicate with us, the more comfortable you’ll feel.

6. Connect with others who have been where you are

While communicating with us can certainly help alleviate some of the initial nerves, it can be a fantastic idea to connect with people who have already been exactly where you are! Head over to our VIP Facebook group, where people of all genders hang out and support/empower each other. Many people in the group have done their own boudoir photoshoots, and we often post testimonials that they’ve written about their experiences! It can be a brilliant way of helping quiet some of those final niggling anxieties.

7. Focus on your WHY

We feel that this can sometimes be the most important thing you can do in preparing for your boudoir photoshoot. Take a bit of time to think about why you’re doing your session, and what you want to get out of it. Many of our clients want intimate portraits to share with their partner as a gift (whether it’s for a birthday, anniversary, engagement present, etc). Those are fantastic reasons, but it’s also great to think about what this experience means for you. We often like to focus on two questions: What parts of your body do you like/love? What parts of your body do you want to like better? Boudoir can be such a transformative journey, and it’s often one that can challenge you to view yourself in a completely different light. Some people might find the experience confronting but therapeutic, others might find it surprising and confidence-building, while others might find it to be an amazingly fun day out. Some people might experience all three of these things. But as you prepare for your boudoir shoot, have a think about what this experience means for you and what you hope to get out of it.

8. Last but not least… remember to relax!

This will be fun, we promise. So take a deep breath, and know that you’re going to have an absolutely awesome time!

Let's Talk Products!

Whether you want to keep your images private to treasure for yourself and/or your significant other, or to display them in your home proudly, we have a range of products to suit every preference. Have a read about our bespoke heirloom products that range from luxury albums, metal wall art, presentation boxes, crystal blocks, and more!

Why You Should Preserve Your Images In Print

Once you’ve had the amazing and empowering experience of a boudoir photography shoot, you are going to be pretty astonished by the way your images look and how they make you feel about yourself. After the initial “Oh my god, is that really me??” moment, the next questions our clients often ask themselves are:

“How and where am I going to display these photos?”

“What do most people do with their photos, and where do they usually display them?”

“Do I want them to be more private (for myself and/or my significant other), or do I want to show them off?”

We take so much pride in the artwork we produce for each of our lovely clients. Given that your boudoir photoshoot experience is unique to you, we offer a range of luxury printed fine art heirlooms so that you can display your images exactly how you want to! Whether you’d like to be the art on the walls of your home, or to display your images together in a hand-crafted bespoke album, we’ve got you.

Luxury Heirloom Albums

Albums are by far our most popular product for displaying your images and turning your unforgettable boudoir experience into a lifetime keepsake. Albums can be stored privately in a chest of draws or bookshelf, or displayed openly in a living room to share with others. If your session was done in part as a gift for your partner, albums are truly the perfect option - being able to gift them a gorgeous customised bound book designed specifically for them is a pretty amazing feeling! But most of our clients often find that when they do a photoshoot for themselves, an album is also the most fantastic way to look back on their images for years to come. Albums allow your experience to become more than just a photoshoot… it tells your story. Our albums are designed to flow in an order that takes the viewer on their own adventure, and we’ll work with you during your gallery reveal and ordering appointment to design it exactly how you want it to be. Most people also haven’t ever seen photos of themselves displayed in a full album (perhaps outside of a wedding album), and it really is the most amazing way to memorialise your boudoir experience and to help solidify seeing yourself in a new light.

Our albums are handcrafted by a boudoir-specific supplier, and are made of gorgeous thick lustre pages which offer rich colours and fine texture. They have lay-flat binding (meaning images will run seamlessly across a two-page spread, with no crease in the middle!), luxe durable cover options, and artistically designed layouts. They are available to order in three sizes: an 8x8 inch, 10x10 inch, and a 12x12 inch. Our 10x10 and 12x12 albums come with a matching display box that will help keep them pristine and in beautiful condition.

Leather Bound Album

Our clients consistently rave about the quality, durability and overall luxe feel of our albums, and how amazing they feel to hold.

Our cover material options span from linen, silk, imitation or genuine leather, suede, snakeskin, and many many more! We also have options of stunning leather-bound journal album designs (pictured above), as well as albums with glistening crystal covers that allow you to display an image of your choosing on the front!

If you want to see full videos where we flick through albums page-by-page, head over to our VIP Facebook Group - it’s a community where people empower and support each other, and share a love of all things boudoir!

Presentation Box with Matted Prints

A handcrafted artisan-quality Presentation Box is a lovely way to store your favourite images. These are done as individually matted 5x7 fine art prints, so that each image becomes its own individual work of art. Our Presentation Boxes can hold between 10 - 20 photos. It’s a great option for those who want the flexibility of being able to store their images away for safe keeping, or to display individual/multiple prints on a shelf or wall.

Metal Wall Art

Some people shy away from wall art, because it can feel a bit intimidating to hang sexy photos of yourself up on a wall in your home! But honestly, we think it can be one of the best investments you make for yourself. If you think about the reason you signed up for a boudoir experience in the first place, was it to build your confidence and to see yourself in a new light? Was it to celebrate yourself as you are right now, and to have a reminder of how beautiful and courageous you are? If either of those reasons resonate for you, wall art might be the perfect choice. There just isn’t a substitute for having a prominent reminder of how incredible you both looked and felt on the day hanging in your home… imagine how it would leave you feeling, and how it would impact your life day-to-day.

We offer metal wall art so that it stands up to whatever environment you wish to display it in - whether that a bedroom, lounge, or a bathroom (a popular option for many of our clients!). The metal showcases photographs beautifully, making them really pop with rich colours and either a beautiful gloss or lustre sheen. Our metals are available in a variety of sizes.

Your final gallery will contain a variety of images that range from sexy and classic, to abstract/detail shots, to some which are soft/sensual, to those which are a bit fun and really show your personality. This allows for you to choose a perfect image for your home, no matter where you might want to display it! A sensual portrait might be great above your bed, for instance, while a classic portrait or close-up detail shot might be gorgeous out in lounge or dining room areas. There will be images to suit most places in your home, so the choice really will be yours.

Crystal Blocks

These crystal blocks are a quintessential luxury product. They are a 1’ thick acrylic block with a metallic image face-mounted to the backside, giving an amazing visual effect. They are absolutely gorgeous as a stand-alone display product, and look incredible on a desk, in a display cabinet, or on a bedside table.

Folios

Our handcrafted folios are ideal as an add-on to an album purchase, and are a perfect way to display two of your favourite photos as a spread. They are presented as full-image folios, giving a large and dramatic presentation experience. The images are mounted on archival board, and laminated with a scratch-proof laminate that not only protects your images, but also brings out their brilliance. You can choose from a range of luxe cover materials also.

Digital Images

Finally, we offer hi-resolution fully-retouched digital images as well. We know that people love the ability to share photos online, particularly when they feel incredibly proud of the photos and themselves for doing a boudoir photoshoot! But unlike studios which only offer an online gallery to download, we want to make sure that even your digital images are displayed in a way that feels luxurious and is made to last.

Given that, we provide crystal engraved USBs that you’ll be able to cherish forever.

We have samples of all of our products available for you to see and touch at your in-person gallery reveal/ordering appointment.

We always recommend having a think beforehand about what products you might want to purchase, but sometimes after you see your final gallery, you fall in love with all your photos and it can make choosing really hard! Whatever products you end up deciding on, we know you’re absolutely going to love.

If you’d like information on the pricing of our products, get in touch with us! We’d love to chat about our products, pricing, and the payment plans we have available that mean every single person can have their own luxury boudoir experience.

Busting Excuses - Why You Deserve A Boudoir Experience

There are times when we might really want to do something for ourselves, but our minds get in the way because of worries, anxieties and fears. These are all 100% normal, and they never need to actually stop you from doing the things that you value and would love to do! Have a read about some of the main reasons why people might try and talk themselves out of doing a boudoir shoot… and about why those reasons don’t have to keep getting in your way.

Let’s look at some of those fears and anxieties…

When we feel nervous about something, it’s incredibly normal to make excuses. We make them all the time. We make excuses to not make the bed in the morning because we’re going to get right back into it again later… but we also make excuses not to love/accept ourselves, or to take care of ourselves in the ways we know we should. Sometimes life gets too busy and things get in the way… we have work, kids, chores, life admin, friends/family who need us, responsibilities. We sometimes use excuses like “I want to lose 5kg first!”, “I just don’t have the money right now”, or “There are other things I need to prioritise”.

We wanted to write this particular blog to show you that no matter what excuse your mind throws at you, you CAN do this. You’re allowed to invest in yourself, and to prioritise YOU. You absolutely are worth it. You’re worthy of pampering, and of loving yourself.

“I don’t have enough time for myself.”

I (Talia) am the first to admit that I can be the WORST at making sure that I give myself breaks when I need to, and that’s why I feel particularly strongly about this one. I know first hand that if you aren’t taking care of yourself mentally, it’s going to be much much harder to take care of other people and the myriad of things going on in your life at any given time. I’ve made endless excuses as to why I had to push through and keep going, and why I had to ignore my own needs/self-care. I’ve often needed Jasper to stop me and tell me that I needed to slow down, because I otherwise simply wouldn’t have. It’s hard to give yourself permission to do it, let alone then trying to actually figure out how to make it happen! How exactly do you take a break, and steal a moment for yourself so you can breathe?

At a boudoir shoot, you’ve got time entirely to yourself. It’s your time, and a chance to put fuel back into your tank. Not to mention, think of all the mental energy you’d save every day if you started to worry less about what other people thought of how you looked, and if you stopped comparing yourself to others. Boudoir photography shines a light on how beautiful and incredible you are, both inside and out. Given that we all need to take breaks for ourselves from time to time, why not spend it having an absolutely amazing time getting pampered, glammed up, and creating images that will serve as a reminder of how brave you are for the rest of your life?

Woman in lace bodysuit lingerie posing for boudoir photo on bed

“I’m not where I want to be in terms of body shape / weight” or “I don’t fit the media’s ideal of beauty.”

I know society has conditioned us to believe that a very very narrow version of ‘beauty’ is acceptable, but WHY do you need to be a certain size to accept/love yourself? It’s a question that I still struggle with myself, and I know first-hand how pervasive those anxieties can be. But I’ve spent a lot of time trying to unpack and explore them, and I keep coming up empty as to any decent or logical reason why that’s realistically the case. No two people are the same - not in terms of their personality, or their appearance. And I know that whenever we look at other people in photos (no matter what height, shape, weight etc they are), the things we often notice about them are the aspects that we think look beautiful! It might be their smile… that they have amazing hair… or that they just exude a sense of confidence and self-assuredness.

Although it’s amazing to have health-related goals, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make changes in your life that leave you feeling physically and mentally better, that never means you have to hate yourself along the way. You’re allowed to be proud of where you are, *and* proud of wherever you might be going. A boudoir shoot is an opportunity to celebrate yourself exactly as you are right now and to take a massive step towards self-acceptance and self-compassion.

We know as well that not everyone is at a stage where they feel positively about their body, and that’s completely fine as well. Sometimes it’s easy to tell someone that they should ‘love/accept themselves’, but it’s not always quite so simple. Because of that, we’ll always try to meet you exactly where you’re at. If there are aspects of yourself that you’d prefer to de-emphasise in photos, we’ll make sure that you have space to let us know and we can talk about that. If there are parts of yourself that you LOVE, we’ll be capturing a lot of photos where those features are front and centre!

We also know that the area of photoshop can be a sensitive topic in today’s day and age, so we’ll always ask you about your preferences when it comes to editing. Whether you want to fully embrace every aspect of yourself and have the photos look as natural as possible (an amazing option!), or whether you want more editing done on your photos (also a totally fine choice!), we’re there for you and what you need.

So even if this particular anxiety about not being the ‘right’ type of beautiful is niggling away in the back of your mind and holding you back, remember… those thoughts are completely normal and understandable given what society teaches us these days, but you can still act in spite of those thoughts being there. You have the power to make active choices that challenge the negative critic in your mind, and which over time, will help you to realise that your worth is about so so much more than what your body looks like.

Head over to our VIP Facebook Community as well… it’s an awesome, supportive group where you can hear about the experiences of other people who felt the exact same anxieties/insecurities as you might right now, and who still had incredible shoot experiences! The group focuses on empowering one another and creating an inclusive, body-positive space.

“I don’t feel sexy / sensual anymore, so there’s no reason for me to do a boudoir shoot.”

This one is definitely a common thought, but it’s seriously just plain wrong. If you’ve had that thought before, this particular excuse is the exact reason why you SHOULD do a boudoir shoot. Life can get so hectic a lot of the time, and our weeks can become a series of days where we take care of kids/family/work responsibilities/chores/etc in an endless loop. It’s completely normal and absolutely ok… we need to prioritise those things in our life, and it can make it understandably hard to remember that we’re still independent, confident and beautiful people at the same time. Boudoir photoshoots offer the chance to reconnect with and explore sides of yourself that you might not have been in touch with for a while (or ever)! We’ve all got that spark inside of us… the one which helped us to feel like a sexy badass that one time you’ll never forget. The one which might have given us the courage to approach someone who we were attracted to. The one which we know is still there, and is just waiting for an opportunity to come out. We love seeing the inevitable shift in people from feeling shy and uncertain at the beginning of a shoot, to just totally feeling themselves and knowing how incredible/sexy they are by the end of it!

“I have no idea what to wear.”

We get this one a lot as well. Firstly, we want to reassure you that you don’t ever have to wear super sexy/revealing clothing. A boudoir shoot is about capturing the essence of you as a person, and our absolute #1 priority is ensuring you feel comfortable and confident in whatever it is you’re wearing. If that’s lingerie or underwear, that’s awesome! If that’s a sweater and jeans with Doc Martins, or a summer dress, or pretty much literally any other item of clothing… those are all fantastic options too!

We’ll always schedule a pre-shoot wardrobe consultation with you beforehand, where we can talk through what options you might have already or be looking to buy. You’ll also have access to our growing client closet, which contains a bunch of stunning items (lingerie, robes, as well as various props such as handcuffs etc) that you can borrow for your shoot! You’ll never be left wondering what to do when it comes to wardrobe, so you can rest easy with this one.

“I can’t afford it / spending money on myself is frivolous.”

We understand that a boudoir photoshoot is an investment, particularly given that it’s a luxury experience. It’s a financial investment, but it’s also an investment in yourself. You are worth investing in… your confidence is worth invest in. You know that feeling you might have gotten in the past when you bought a particularly amazing item of clothing that just made you feel like a million bucks? Boudoir is a bit like that, except often a whole lot more powerful. Because it’s not that one piece of clothing anymore… boudoir shows you that it’s all you, and that you’re already a million bucks without any need for extra bells and whistles.

Because we believe that every single person deserves to have a luxury boudoir experience, we also offer a range of flexible payment plans to suit every budget! There’s a booking retainer to schedule your shoot date in, but when it comes to purchasing products, we have both pre- and post-payment plans available that allow you to pay off your dream products in instalments that suit your specific financial needs.

“I don’t have anyone to give sexy photos to.”

We have lots of clients who book in for a shoot so they can give their spouse or partner a gorgeous album or printed wall art as a gift, but we arguably have more clients who book in to do a shoot entirely for themselves. When was the last time you thought “hot damn, I look pretty amazing!” about yourself? You never need an external reason to give yourself an opportunity to look and feel phenomenal. Having a loved one to gift photos to is a wonderful feeling, but giving yourself the gift of confidence and empowerment is pretty much priceless.

“I’m scared / nervous / embarrassed.”

We can’t stress this one enough… Heartfire Boudoir is a completely judgment-free boudoir studio. We’re incredibly passionate about inclusivity with respect to body type, age, gender, sexual orientation… you name it. We believe that every body is beautiful, and we will 100% stand with you in celebrating yours. It doesn’t matter whether or not you’ve modelled before (most of our clients never have!), or whether you have any idea about how to pose or look ‘sexy’ (we’ll pose you from head to toe, so you’ll be guided through that every step of the way)... the entire purpose of a boudoir experience is to have an amazingly fun time just being yourself, and to realise that you don’t need to be anyone else.

And just to add, the comedic value inherent within watching the two of us demonstrate how to do all of the ‘sexy’ poses will eliminate any nervousness you might have been feeling initially! A lot of the time, we’re capturing photos of you laughing because of all the silly things Jasper and I do/say during a shoot. We’ll chat in between photos, and pretty quickly, any fear you might have had at the start will likely be long long gone.

We’re also aware that a boudoir photoshoot can be an incredibly personal and intimate experience, and that many people have had experiences in their past that might have left them uncomfortable with being unclothed around others. We really, really get that. We’ll always find out before the shoot day even comes around about your preference regarding how clothed/unclothed you’d like to be during your shoot, whether there are any triggers you might have that would be helpful for us to know about, and whether you feel comfortable with us re-positioning limbs/hair/etc during the shoot or if you’d like for us to give verbal directions and demonstrations only. If you have any concerns or fears around these types of issues, please don’t hesitate to chat with us about how we can make sure you feel as safe and comfortable as possible for the entire duration of your time with us.

“Everyone will see my photos.”

This is a quick one we want to clarify… if you don’t want anyone else to see your photos, no one EVER will. Your privacy is one of the most important things to us, and the only images we share are ones that clients have given us written permission to share online. Whether or not to share your images is 100% up to you, and you’ll never be pressured to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Still have worries on your mind? Reach out to us for a chat - we’re incredibly happy to answer any questions, and to talk to you about anything you might be uncertain of!

Kirsten's Boudoir Experience

Read about what Kirsten’s experience was like of doing her very first boudoir photoshoot! She shares some of her initial anxieties and insecurities, what she thought of the photoshoot itself, and how it’s ultimately made her feel like a more confident and empowered person.

Kirsten Shares the Story of her Boudoir Photoshoot

When we asked Kirsten to write about her boudoir photoshoot experience with us, we were so touched by her story. Kirsten is someone who truly has become a genuine friend after the first shoot we did, and we’re constantly inspired by her strength as a mother, wife and all-round amazing person.

Woman lying on a bed in white lingerie for bridal boudoir photoshoot

I knew I’d always wanted to do a boudoir shoot, but I was too nervous to actually go through with it... after all, it’s not an easy thing to contemplate getting half naked in front of a stranger! I was concerned it would feel like an incredibly awkward situation, and given that most of the photographers I’d seen were men, I was worried about doing something so intimate and personal with a random person who might have potentially been a bit of a creep!

I also wasn’t 100% happy with my body. I always thought certain things could be ‘better’ in some way, especially after having kids. Those insecurities around my body really held me back. My body changed a lot after having two children - I’m bigger in places that I wasn’t before; I have stretch marks I never used to have... it was hard to adjust to feeling so different. My husband always told me that I was beautiful, and that he thought I had the best body, but I still found it so hard to actually believe. I appreciated the compliments, but taking them on board felt like a totally different story!

On top of that, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in November 2020 - which is a chronic lifelong illness that causes chronic fatigue syndrome and widespread pain which impacts my muscles, bones and joints. I’ve also dealt with endometriosis for many years before that too. I’m not the same person I was, and I’m never going to be that person again. There are certain things that my body just can’t do that I used to find easy, no matter how hard I try now. With the fatigue, I used to be able to go out during the day and then do something all night and be fine! But now, I can spend an hour out of the house and I’m left feeling completely exhausted. I remember before I began treatment for the endometriosis, it was four years of severe cramps, bloating, etc… it’s hard to describe the toll it took on me over those years. The fibromyalgia pain also started getting worse around the same time.

Given everything, it just hadn’t seemed like a boudoir photoshoot was on the cards for me. But when I met Talia and Jasper, they were both so friendly and I felt incredibly comfortable around them. I ended up thinking ‘what the hell’, and signed up to give it a go!

Some of my family members didn’t quite know what boudoir photography was, so I showed them some photos from the Heartfire Boudoir website and they were really excited and supportive. My mum said “Well if you’ve got the body for it, you might as well!”, which still makes me laugh to think about. My husband was definitely the most excited, not surprisingly!

As the date of the shoot drew closer, I found myself feeling more and more anxious about how it would go. I’d never really modelled before, and I was worried that I’d have no idea what to do! I was definitely nervous at the start, and I found myself wondering ‘Am I doing it right? Does it look good?’. I was so conscious of my facial expressions as well… having done pole dancing, I had a bit of an idea about how to make shapes with my body, but I had no clue what to do with my face to ‘look sexy’! As time went on though, I started to feel a lot more comfortable. Talia and Jasper were so great at guiding me through poses and helping me with the facial expressions too. In the end, hours flew by and I barely even noticed because I was having such a fun time! I honestly just ended up forgetting everything I was worried about at the start.

Woman in Honey Birdette white lace robe lying on bed

During the shoot itself, Jasper showed me a few photos on the back of the camera as we went and I just remember thinking “Who is that chick?? That’s not me!”. I know when I look at myself in a mirror, I look inherently the same as how I look in photos - but it feels so different still. It’s different when it’s captured that way, and it definitely made me feel absolutely amazing, really beautiful, and a lot more confident in myself.

By the time I left, I was SO excited to see all the images!! I was tired too haha (Talia had told me the shoot would feel a bit like a yoga class, and she wasn’t wrong!), but it was so so worth it. When I finally saw the photos, it was almost like looking at another person I hardly recognised… my first thought was just “Oh. My. GOD.” I genuinely never thought I could look like that. I felt so beautiful, and I was beyond excited to show my husband, friends and family!

In hindsight, the experience really has changed the way I see myself now. I feel more confident in how I look, and as a result, I feel more confident as a person. I’ve realised that I do actually look like that, and it’s a lot easier to believe my husband’s compliments these days. Even though I’m a make-up artist, I spend most of my time wearing casual clothes and very little make-up myself, so I never feel particularly fancy. It makes me love looking back at the photos these days, and I sometimes think to myself that I scrub up pretty alright!

My husband is obsessed with the photos as well, which makes me so happy. He was absolutely in shock seeing them for the first time! He actually has one of them printed and sitting on his computer desk so he can stare at it all day haha.

To anyone who might be considering a boudoir shoot, I’d say just DO IT. Talia and Jasper are awesome people, and you’ll feel absolutely fine. It’s not as scary once you do it, it really is just those anxieties beforehand. You’ll feel comfortable, empowered, like a total badass, and you really will have such a fun time.

I think I’ve also loved and really valued being part of the VIP Facebook group that Heartfire Boudoir runs as well. It’s been great fun - and it feels like a little community almost. You get to know everyone even though you’ve never met in-person, and it’s an incredibly supportive space where people just build each other up.

I seriously have no regrets about doing a boudoir shoot, and have just recently done a second one with Heartfire Boudoir as well (which was an equally amazing, but far less nerve-wracking experience!). I feel so thankful and proud of myself for taking that initial leap and just going for it!

Why I Love Boudoir Photography

What is boudoir photography, and why am I so passionate about it? People sometimes think that it’s just about taking ‘sexy photos’, but it really is so much more than that… boudoir is about transformation.

Firstly, what is boudoir photography? If you google it, you’ll get definitions like:

“Boudoir photography is a photographic style featuring intimate, sensual, romantic, and sometimes erotic images of its subjects in a photographic studio, bedroom or private dressing room environment, primarily intended for the private enjoyment of the subject and their romantic partners.”

What that definition fails to capture though is that boudoir is also a transformative, empowering, and confidence-building experience. It’s one that can offer a newfound sense of ownership over your body. To say that boudoir is ‘just about taking sexy photos’ would be the understatement of the century.

I find it hard sometimes to put into words why boudoir is so important to me. I’m not even the one who takes the photos most of the time, Jasper is! For me, boudoir is about self-acceptance, body positivity, and exploration of yourself as an individual. It’s about getting completely glammed up and feeling amazing, but it’s equally about laughing your butt off and watching Jasper and I demonstrate weird poses (that look gorgeous in photos, by the way :P). It’s about the transformation that occurs between the time you step through the doors for your shoot, and when you walk back out again several hours later. It’s about feeling beautiful… and it’s something that every single person deserves to experience.

We started shooting boudoir photography because both of us felt so passionately about being able to see beauty in everyone. Being able to show people what we see in them is such a privilege, and the most rewarding job we could ask for. So many people tell us that they couldn’t look “that beautiful” because they weigh ‘too much’, don’t have the ‘right’ body shape, have stretch marks, are too short or too tall… society programs us to feel inadequate, but it’s just not true. We love being able to show someone a photograph of themselves and have them say “Is that really me??”... showing someone that they CAN feel beautiful inside and out. Those reactions from clients had such a profound impact on the both of us, and since the very first time we did a shoot, we knew we’d found our passion.

We feel so lucky to be a mirror for our clients. Not the kind of mirror that leaves you feeling lesser-than, but one that sees past all the perceived imperfections and shows you what you’re really made of.

The Transformation

This is by far the best part of the entire experience for Jasper and I… seeing the transformation happen in people. When they arrive at the hotel initially, most of the time, people are visibly nervous! Shaky hands and voices, a slightly flushed face… we see it all the time. Once they sit down to begin having their hair and makeup done, the transformation begins. We see them start to feel excitement when talking about what look they might want. Their anxiousness becomes nervous energy, and they often say how keen they are to see how their makeup is going to look at the end. They start to shed the worries and fears that were strong in their mind only 30 minutes earlier.

Then the shoot begins! The first few poses are simple ones to get people warmed up - we always talk you through them, letting you know the best place to put your hands, where to turn your face, whether to close your eyes or look at the camera, etc. When people see the first photo on the back of the camera, their response is usually total bewilderment and a statement of “OH MY GOD, no way!”. As we continue, the laughter often starts. We’ll tell them to point their toes, squeeze their knees together, and do all sorts of things that feel a bit funny at the time - but we show them photos along the way, so they see why we suggest those things! They start to feel sexy… and they start feeling themselves in a way they often haven’t before. It’s so obvious that it’s starting to click for them.

By the end of the session, we often feel as though we’ve made a new friend. We’ve shared an experience that all of us will always remember… we’ve laughed, we’ve had fun, and we’ve shared stories about ourselves along the way. We’ve done something that fully embraces and celebrates who they are, in a beautiful and vulnerable way.

Once we have a reveal session and show them a slideshow of all their images, their jaws drop. They see themselves like they’ve never before… how we see them. How their partner or loved ones see them. When they walk out the door, they’re beaming and talking about how they can’t wait to tell their friends about the experience they had.

So many of our clients are incredibly excited to share their photos online as well, particularly in the VIP Facebook group we run! It’s an awesome, supportive community where you can hear about the experiences of other people who felt the exact same anxieties as you might right now. The group focuses on empowering one another and creating an inclusive, body-positive space. It’s always so amazing for our clients to share their photos in the group and get an amazing response from everyone there!

A Piece of My Story

Every single person has their own story… their own struggles with self acceptance, body image difficulties, and challenges feeling at home in their physical self. If anyone told me 5 years ago that I’d be co-running a boudoir photography business with my husband, it’s hard to articulate how disbelievingly I would have looked at them. Picture a speaking-a-totally-different-language type of situation.

I spent most of my life avoiding any and all photos being taken of me. If I had to be involved in a family or group photo, I cringed internally. I hated almost everything about my appearance, and those critical voices were so consuming that I spent close to 15 years struggling with various eating disorders. Irrespective of two hospital admissions and ongoing therapy, the view of myself as inadequate continued to be as pervasive as ever. I continued to avoid photos. I avoided wearing clothes that I wanted to wear. I started to avoid going out and spending time with friends and family, because I felt that how I looked would offend people somehow. I was too large, too unattractive, and just not good enough.

Viewing myself in that light for so long left me vulnerable to making poor choices elsewhere in my life. I found myself in damaging relationships that only served to solidify the negative beliefs I had about myself. After one of the hospital admissions, I entered a 3-year relationship that went on to become incredibly abusive. I felt as though I lost touch with myself - both my body, and my identity as a strong person. In many ways, I’d forgotten what it was like to feel confident. Empowered. At peace with (or at the very least, not at war with) myself.

Therapy helped me leave that relationship, and it was instrumental in slowly disentangling the many critical thoughts I had about myself. But it wasn’t until I met Jasper that things really began to shift. He was a photographer, which I thought was awesome when we first met! And one day early whilst we were dating, to my own complete surprise, I asked if he might be open to taking some sexy photos of me. It was the most insane thing I had ever suggested, and to this day, I still have no idea what made me want to do it. I think I was in a place of feeling utterly exhausted by hating the way I looked so much, and hiding myself away because of that shame. Tired of feeling so disconnected from myself, my sexuality, and a sense of agency and control over my own body.

(Yep, that’s me from the very first boudoir shoot I did! There were lots more to come :P)

There was no going back after the first photoshoot we did. To my surprise, I loved it. I felt awkward and shy and unbelievably nervous at first, but after a while, I found myself really enjoying it. It felt liberating to explore that side of myself, and to feel ‘sexy’ in a safe way. For me, boudoir photography became a way to celebrate my body and the person I truly was. It meant making an active decision NOT to hide away, but to challenge shame and self-hate. It helped me feel proud of my body… for what it has survived, and the way that it continues to carry me through life each and every single day. And it reminded me that I had control over my body, no one else. I can’t describe how healing that process felt.

I also started to consider what memories I wanted to have when I was 80 or 90 years old. Would I be glad that I believed the inner voice telling me I wasn’t good enough, or would I feel thankful that I made choices to challenge it? Despite how I felt about myself at the time, I knew that 90 year old me would think that the 25 year old version of myself was pretty hot! And I’m so glad I held onto that feeling… that I was already enough.

Boudoir is so, so important to me. It offers me the chance to help other people feel the same things that I felt, and to have the same transformative experience that impacted my entire life. Both Jasper and I take so much pride in being able to show others how to celebrate their bodies, and to remind them that they really are amazing exactly as they are.

Talia xx

Boudoir Photography - Frequently Asked Questions. The thought of doing a boudoir session can be scary. When talking to people about their session, we often get asked all sorts of questions… here are the ones we get asked the most!

Let us answer some of your questions…

The thought of a boudoir session can be intimidating and honestly a bit scary! When talking to people about their session, we get asked all sorts of questions. Given that, we thought it might be helpful to compile a list of our most frequently asked questions to offer you some insight into what it’s like to do a boudoir session with us!

Do you share my images?

Our number one priority is making sure our clients feel comfortable and safe. Boudoir can be a life-changing experience, but in some ways, that also makes it a pretty nerve-wracking one too! You might be in the process of learning to love your body and  be feeling not quite ready to share intimate photos with the world… you might have done a boudoir shoot specifically for your partner and don’t want anyone else to see those special images. Both of these are great reasons for not sharing your photos! It’s completely about your personal preferences, and what you feel is best for you. We never share any images without your written consent, and only ever share photos that you feel comfortable with!

Do I have to wear lingerie?

Definitely not! It totally depends on your personality. You can wear literally anything that makes you feel confident and sexy. For some people, that might be lingerie - for others, it’s going to be a t-shirt and sneakers. We’ll always talk to you about a range of different wardrobe options before your shoot, so you don’t have to worry about not knowing what to bring!

Is hair and makeup included?

Hair and makeup can be included as an optional add-on to your boudoir experience! Whether you want a ‘I just woke up like this’ natural look, or something that’s more full-on glam, our professional hair and makeup artist will have you covered. They’ll tailor a look that will have you feeling your absolute best.

Do you photoshop my images?

We approach each image as its own work of art. We tweak things such as exposure, lighting and colour balance. We also offer skin retouching, and can remove temporary blemishes (e.g. bruises or pimples) and/or permanent features (e.g. scars). But we’ll never morph you into something that you’re not, because we know you’re beautiful exactly as you are. We always speak with you to understand your exact preferences with respect to editing your photos.

Do I need to know how to pose?

Not at all! It’s our job to guide you through each pose step-by-step. We’ll not only talk you through it, but we often jump into poses next to you so you can see them being demonstrated!

What type of print products do you have?

We offer a variety of luxury bespoke products that are perfect for displaying the photos that you’ll want to last a lifetime. You really can’t go past the feeling of picking up and holding a physical product... whether it’s something you want to gift to a loved one, or to have for yourself as a reminder of how incredible you are, they can act as a daily reminder of how transformative boudoir shoots can be. We offer luxury albums with gorgeous thick lustre pages (these come in a range of sizes, and with a variety of luxe cover materials to choose from!); crystal blocks; metallic wall art; as well as presentation boxes and folio spreads.

Do you offer digitals?

We do! All of our product collections include digital images.

Where will my shoot be?

Your shoot will happen at our dedicated home boudoir studio.

I’m freaking out! How can I calm my nerves?

It’s completely 200% ok to feel nervous… that’s part of the experience! Jasper and I often say that it would probably be strange if you WEREN’T feeling at least a little nervous. But our clients often comment that those nerves disappear pretty early into the shoot after they realise how much of a laid-back, fun and relaxed experience it is.

"Even the parts of my body I didn’t like at all, I am starting to love again..." - Jasmine's Boudoir Photoshoot Experience

Read about Jasmine's experience of doing a boudoir session with Heartfire Boudoir, and of finding her confidence and spark again!

We had the absolute pleasure of doing a session recently with the lovely, caring and incredibly beautiful Jasmine. She gave her session 110%, and it’s so wonderful how much her photos capture all the different sides of herself: sexy and sensual, fun and down-to-earth, and just all-round amazing :)

Boudoir truly is about embracing and celebrating the person you are right now. Have a read below of what Jasmine’s experience doing a boudoir shoot was like!

Beautiful blonde woman with tattoos lying on bed in black lingerie for boudoir photo

Did you have any fears/hesitations about doing a boudoir session?

I did in the beginning, until I experienced the session. At first I was nervous because I felt like I didn’t have the model characteristics… I was scared to show my body and even my face because of my low self esteem. I was really happy to do it but at the same time I was very hesitant about the way I looked.

How did you feel before your shoot?

I was both nervous and excited, I didn’t know how to feel. Talia helped me relax a lot from her kind nature.

Woman wearing lace lingerie laughing and enjoying her boudoir photoshoot

Now that you’ve had your session, how was it and how did it make you feel?

I was very surprised with how I did, and that I wasn’t that nervous to pose in my lingerie. I was getting a lot of praise too from Jasper and Talia which helped me a lot! I loved every part of it, I didn’t want it to end. It honestly made me think of doing another one! After seeing some photos on the camera when I was in the shoot, I was so surprised and couldn’t believe it was me on that camera... it made me feel comfortable with myself more and happy with joy.

Woman lying on hotel room floor with lace lingerie looking sexy

Did anything change about the way you saw your own beauty/sensuality/body confidence as a result of the session?

Yes, it’s taken me a long time to love myself again. I had my partner telling me I am beautiful but you have to feel it yourself. After seeing my photos, I just had this whole self esteem spark in me again. I haven’t felt sexy in about 4 years, and it’s just so wonderful and amazing how photos can make you feel like that, especially in the society that we live in today. I feel sexy and confident to wear different clothes now, and even the parts of my body I didn’t like at all, I am starting to love again.

Beautiful woman having fun and feeling confident wearing lingerie in hotel room

What would you say to people considering doing a boudoir shoot, but say they are too shy, nervous, uncertain, etc?

I would tell them the honest truth about how I felt until I tried it. I wouldn’t push them but I would tell them that it will help you blossom so much. It’s outside of some people’s comfort zone, but sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone to feel that spark.

Is there anything we could have done to make the experience even better for you?

You two couldn’t have done a better job. Not only did you do such a fantastic job with the photo shoot, but you made me feel comfortable and praised me to realise I have beauty inside and out. And it’s so amazing how comfortable you can be with people! You two are the best at what you do. I have no words to describe how amazing you two are. Thank you so much for this experience, it’s helped me and taught me a lot .

FIVE Myths About Doing a Boudoir Session.

Want to know the most common misconceptions about boudoir photoshoots, and what is actually true about them? Learn more about this beautiful genre of intimate portrait photography.

MYTH: I’ll have to get naked or wear lingerie.

The beauty of boudoir is that it can be literally whatever you want and need it to be. Every single person has a different language and expression of sensuality. Some people feel confident and empowered when they’re wearing nothing at all. Some feel that way when they’re covered in lace lingerie and pearls. For others, it might be when they’re wearing an oversized t-shirt and some worn-in black boots. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to boudoir photography. We’re here to help you explore the parts of yourself that you want to explore. It’s a space where you can be free to wear (or not wear) whatever makes you feel amazing.

MYTH: I have to lose weight or have the ‘perfect figure’.

This is one of those particularly pesky ones. I think it’s safe to say that we all have those niggling thoughts in the back of our minds… that we’ll do the things we really want to when such-and-such happens. And frequently, that ‘such-and-such’ is about us feeling as though we need to change our physical appearance. It’s something we’ve been taught that we can (and should) change to fit a certain mold. But life is what passes us by while we wait for those anxieties to take up less space in our minds… while we try to change things about ourselves that were never wrong or broken to begin with. Our bodies were never the problem. We truly believe that every person can look absolutely incredible, exactly as they are, right in this very moment. When we look at photographs of other people, whether they’re in smaller or larger bodies than ourselves, we often recognise that person’s beauty because it’s not about what size they are… it’s about how they carry themselves, the look in their eyes, or the slight smile that says so much more than words ever could. We don’t apply the same harsh critique to them that we do to ourselves, and it undermines our ability to view ourselves in that light. Give yourself the chance to see yourself how the rest of the world sees you, and know that you’re already enough.

MYTH: I’m shy and/or not a ‘sexy’ person.

I don’t think there’s any person who walks into a boudoir photoshoot feeling 100% free of nerves, or feeling confident that they innately know how to ‘look sexy’. I want to put some of those worries at ease - it’s not your job to know. It’s our job to help guide and coach you, and to walk you through poses that you feel comfortable with. You could be the shyest person in the world, but still look amazing in photographs when you’re given a safe place to try new things and support from people who do this for a living. But those details aside, the sexiest thing any person can do is just to give themselves permission to feel sexy. To embrace the part of themselves that has always been there, but might not have had many opportunities to be expressed. Funnily enough, you’ll also find that a lot of the poses that look REALLY sexy are the ones that are the most hilariously difficult to get into or for us to photograph/capture, and we all have an absolute blast together during those moments. It can actually be a pretty enlightening experience to demystify what ‘sexy’ truly involves!

MYTH: It’s vain to have sexy photos taken.

Society somehow manages to simultaneously teach us that our appearance is all that matters, and at the same time, that it’s vain or conceited to acknowledge that we like the way we look. But having sexy photos taken isn’t any more vain than getting a massage or going for a run… or taking that mental health day for yourself… or knowing when to say ‘no’ to other people because you’re feeling burnt out. It’s no different from putting on make-up in the morning because it makes you feel good. Or buying that pair of jeans because it makes your butt look amazing. It’s self-care. It’s something that can be entirely for yourself. And when you spend your life taking care of others, going to work, and managing the million responsibilities you have every single day, no one should have the right to tell you that you can’t take one single day to treat yourself.

MYTH: I need to have a partner to share the photos with.

It’s a lovely thing to be able to share your photos with a partner. But you know what’s also lovely? Having an amazing experience just for you, where you give yourself permission to do the things that society so often deems unnecessary (like taking time for yourself, exploring your sensuality, daring to embrace your own beauty… you know, all of those clearly unreasonable things!). I don’t think a blog post can adequately convey how strongly I feel this, but YOU are enough of a reason. You deserve to feel pampered. To feel confident, strong and beautiful. To have photographs to look back on which make you think ‘Holy crap, I did that. Me. I had no idea that I could.’ It’s oftentimes a difficult journey to truly understand our own worth, but that journey starts with realising that it’s ok (and in fact, incredibly important) to allow yourself to do things simply for yourself.

Empowerment and body acceptance is for EVERY person.

Boudoir is a genre of portraiture that is often presented as being predominantly targeted towards women. And it absolutely is for women. It’s an experience that aims to create a space of empowerment, sensuality, confidence, self-love and body acceptance.

But these concepts aren’t exclusively relevant to women, not by a long shot. They’re equally salient and important for men, and people who fall across the entire spectrum of gender identification. Empowerment, self-love, body acceptance… these are concepts that resonate for humans across every kind of spectrum, be it physical shape, age, ethnicity, gender, etc

There’s a phrase known as ‘dudeoir’ floating around the industry at present, which I feel fails to fully encapsulate the intimacy, beauty, and bravery of male-identifying individuals who partake in a boudoir session. When we have shoots with these clients, it’s no less an experience of intimate portraiture than it is for the women that we photograph. It should be equally empowering… equally sensual… and equally about both strength and vulnerability. All people should know that they have permission to feel those things, without any judgment from others. To tap into the parts of themselves that they might often keep private, or which not be represented and normalised in mainstream media. The parts that they might only ever share with a very close loved one, or at times, never have the opportunity to share at all.

The current spaces where men and gender-diverse individuals can speak openly about their body image difficulties remains limited. Expectations of stoicism and strength remain firmly in place still, although the tides are slowly beginning to shift for the better. But it’s something that requires work. It’s a privilege to be able to do our part, and to create a safe space for people of every gender identity to have the experience of a boudoir session. But it also takes people not using terms like ‘dudeoir’, which presents intimate portraiture of men as something of an amusing joke... a comical version of so-called ‘legitimate’ boudoir photography that females are allowed to engage in.

When Jasper and I were first starting out in this genre, we searched the internet far and wide for inspiration where the subject was male or non-female-identifying. Although it’s unbelievably wonderful to see such a huge array of body shapes and sizes when it comes to intimate portraiture for women, we ran into quite significant difficulties when attempting to step outside of this realm. There were some photographs of men (often those which would fall into the category of fashion/underwear photography with professional models), but there was nowhere near the level of representation of different shapes and sizes that we found for women. In fact, one single body type was largely all that we came across. And although there’s nothing wrong at all with people who possess that kind of physique, showing just one particular version of beauty does little to provide an inclusive and safe space that honours the fact that our differences are what make us truly and uniquely beautiful.

Every human deserves to feel empowered, sexy and confident. Every human also deserves to know that it’s ok to struggle with things sometimes. Sharing in the struggle is a fundamental part of what makes us human, and allows us to remain connected to one another. As the wonderful Brene Brown stated, “People who wade into discomfort and vulnerability, and tell the truth about their stories, are the real badasses.”

I’d like to give a final shout-out to the man behind the lens for most of our clients, Jasper, who has been brave enough to step in front of the camera countless times (as you’ll see in this post). I’m so proud of him for not only constantly striving to create space for people of every gender to feel amazing in front of the camera, but for stepping into that space of vulnerability himself.
